This website used to be maintained by me, Paul van Jaarsveld. I moved from Bloemfontein to Uganda and from Uganda to Jeffreys Bay and at the moment I have exchanged soaring for surfing. If there is anybody in the club that would be willing to keep the site up to date, please contact me on the contacts page. I will give you free training and the site is already built in such a way that you can update it from any internet connection. I have been struggling to get news etc. out of club members and it is very difficult to keep the site up to date if I have to nag for photos and news all the time. The best solotion is that there must be an active club member who does the updates. This site has also been hosted on my expense for the past few years. Happy landings and congrats to the winners of the latest Dust Devil. Paul.

After what was a very successful time of chairing Bloemfontein Gliding
Club, Theo van den Nieuwenhof stepped down as the chairperson. Theo had
poured a lot of his life, time and money in Bloemfontein Gliding Club
and was also behind the successful hosting of the National Gliding
Championships also known as Dust Devil. Jacques van Wyk was recently
elected as the new Chairperson. Delarey also stepped down as the
treasurer after years of unselfish service and donated his Ka8 to the
club as mentioned earlier in the website. Andre van Niekerk was elected
as the new treasurer. Congratulations to Jacques and Andre, and many
thanks to Theo and Delarey for serving the gliding community and sport
over the past few years.

While speaking to a Stephan Thomas, the off shore webby of SSSA
website, he pointed me to an article on the web about a small jet and
a glider collision recently.

Everybody
survived and by all standards, if you can walk away from such
accidents and tell the story you are lucky. It is apparent that there
was a fair share of good airmanship involved and both pilots followed
the correct procedures as they handled the difficult situations. One
cannot help to wonder if it would have been avoided if the glider was
fitted with a transponder or had some device so that the jet would
pick it up.
If the whole transponder thing would go through
who is going to pocket all the transponder sales? And what will the
future be of gliding because of the airspace issues with other
aircraft? Those are questions that will also be answered in the not
so remote future. If you have a chance to fly a glider, make very
good use of every opportunity and enjoy it!
